Biography

Together with his colleague Rolf Schult, Thormann received the German Dubbing Award in the Outstanding Overall Achievement category in 2007.

Along with greats such as Rainer Brandt (died 2024, voiced Tony Curtis, among others), Eckart Dux (died 20224, voiced Anthony Perkins, among others), Arnold Marquis (died 1990, voiced Bud Spencer, among others) and Thomas Danneberg (died 2023, voiced Arnold Schwarzenegger, among others), Thormann was one of the most important dubbing actors of the post-war era - a "golden generation". The Berlin actor was still in the studio in his mid-90s.

In 1969 he received the honor of Berlin State Actor.

As a director, he staged Bertolt Brecht's Kleinbürgerhochzeit and Tennessee Williams' Die Glasmenagerie at the Berliner Tribüne in 1991. He also directed Die Hose by Carl Sternheim. At the Schillertheater he staged Bürger Schippel (Sternheim). At the Hansa-Theater in Berlin he staged Der Flieger. For the Theater am Kurfürstendamm, he directed Ein besserer Herr (by Walter Hasenclever); he also staged this play in Stuttgart.

Thormann began his career as a stage actor and initially played at the Ernst-Barlach-Theater, later at Theater Bonn, Theater Bremen and Schauspielhaus Bochum. He also appeared on the stage of the Schillertheater in Berlin from 1962 until its closure in 1993, where he performed both classical and modern material.
