- At first, he wanted to work in architecture or law, he made up his mind very late to be an actor.
- He attempted to sue Aaron Spelling Productions in the early 1990s for not telling him early enough about the mini-series Dynasty: The Reunion (1991) (Thomson had starred in the original series Dynasty (1981) from 1982-1989). In the years following the original "Dynasty," Thomson had become a cast member of the daytime soap Santa Barbara (1984) and was unable to take time off because of the conflicting schedules. His role on "Dynasty: The Reunion" was recast with actor Robin Sachs.
