- She was discovered by British producer Ian Levine, who was in the United States in 1975 scouting for gospel and soul singers he could promote in the UK. The two recorded several tracks which resulted in a contract with 20th Century Records.
- Ellen Lucille Thomas was discovered in her hometown of Chicago by British DJ and songwriter/producer Ian Levine. Levine had come to the U.S. to discover talent for his newly formed Voltafine Production Company. His goal was to record American soul singers and lease the results to major recording companies. Impressed by Thomas' voice, he cut some tracks with her and secured a deal with 20th Century Records.
- "Heartless" became her only single other than "High Energy" to chart outside of the dance charts in the United States. "Heartless" peaked at No. 84 on the Black Singles chart (later renamed the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart) in 1985.
