Dave Thomas

Trivia

Dave Thomas

  • Thomas and Rick Moranis originally created the characters Bob and Doug McKenzie in protest against government requirements for "identifiable Canadian content" in domestically produced television programming. The skits, as an SCTV program "The Great White North" featured two dim witted brothers who combined as many negative Canadian stereotypes as possible. Despite this, they became so popular that the skits were included in the U.S. version of the program.
  • Older brother of musician/composer Ian Thomas.
  • Dave and Ian's father, John Edward Thomas, was an ordained Baptist minister and professor of philosophy at McMaster University, who specialized in health care ethics. Their mother, Moreen Duff Thomas (Muir), was an accomplished harpist and composer, who worked for decades as a church organist and music director in the Hamilton, ON area.
  • Has four children 2 boys and 2 girls: John, Harrison Thomas, Emily and Charlie and they live in Agoura Hills, California.
  • When Dave arrived at McMaster in 1968, the university did not have a drama department. Along with Martin Short and George Brophy, Dave co-founded the McMaster Shakespearean Players in 1969-70. The Student Union agreed to fund their plays, on condition that they perform Shakespeare. So their first three productions were The Odd Couple, MacBeth, and Frankenstein. Dave's brother Ian was musical director for Frankenstein, and Eugene Levy played Igor. (Eugene's character reappeared on SCTV years later.).
  • While he was at McMaster, Dave became Director of Announcing for the campus radio station, and also served as Editor-in-Chief for the student newspaper, The Silhouette.
  • He is 7 1/2 years younger than Joe Flaherty who played his younger brother in Follow That Bird (1985).
  • Dave has an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from McMaster University (1972). He started an MA degree in that department and completed the coursework for it, focusing on Shakespeare, Chaucer, and Milton -- although he ended up doing theatre and advertising work instead, rather than staying in academia.
  • Was chosen to host the first annual The 2000 Canadian Comedy Awards (2000) in Toronto.
  • Attended McMaster University.
  • His mother, Moreen "Mo" Thomas. died on May 18, 2022 in Burlington, Ontario, Canada.
