Teixeirinha was born on 3 March 1927 in Rolante, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. He was an actor and writer, known for Tropeiro Velho (1979), Carmen, a cigana (1976) and Pobre João (1975). He died on 5 December 1985 in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

His 1960 folk song &quot;Coracao de Luto&quot; (Mourn&#39;s Heart) sold more than 25 million copies and ranks in the top 10 list of best selling singles worldwide.
