Stelios Tatasopoulos(1908-2000)

Stelios Tatasopoulos was a Greek film director and producer whose work spanned more than four decades. He made his mark with the silent feature Social Decay (1932), regarded as the first film of social criticism in Greek cinema, addressing themes such as unemployment, drugs, corruption, and repression of labor movements. His acclaimed drama Black Soil (1952) won the top award of the Panhellenic Union of Film Critics and received a special distinction at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival in 1973, while also earning recognition at a Soviet Union festival. Trained in Paris, Tatasopoulos directed a total of 27 films, moving from socially charged dramas to comedies, including Mitros and Mitros kai Mitrousis stin Athina (1960) and The Dervish Boys (1960) with Thanasis Vengos. His final film, Pos katantisame, Sotiri!.. (1972), capped a career that reflected both social concerns and popular entertainment in Greek cinema.
