Biography

Tang Laiwei is a Wushu and Tai Chi practitioner and teacher. He started training at the age of seven years old at the Beijing Shichahai Sport Academy under Grandmaster Wu Bin a pioneer of modern Wushu. The youngest male team member of the Beijing Wushu Team when it was formed in 1974, the Team went on to win 12 consecutive China National Wushu Championship. His famous alumni include Li Lianjie (Jet Li), Hao Zhihua, Li Xia, Huang Qiuyan, Wang Qun, Li Zhizhou and Cui Yahui

During his career as a professional athlete, Tang Laiwei won over 20 medals. He competed in events including Changquan, Spear, Straight Sword, Broad Sword, Double Broad Sword, 3 Section Cudgel, Baguazhang, Xing Yi Quan, Tai Chi as well as Duilian.

As a member of the Beijing Wushu Team, Tang Laiwei traveled extensively in China and overseas (including U.S.A, Canada, Japan, UK, New Zealand, Spain, Africa, and Australia) promoting Wushu and the Chinese culture. He appears in a number of prominent documentaries and movies including 'This is Kung Fu' 'Dragons of the Orient' and 'Shaolin Temple 3: Martial Arts of Shaolin' with teammate Jet Li.

Tang Laiwei migrated to Australia in the late 1980s and continues to promote Wushu. He teaches at his academy Taichi for Life in Forest Hill, Victoria as well as the Monash University Wushu & Tai Chi Club.

Tang Laiwei holds an 8th Dan ranking and was awarded the Wushu Development Award by the Chinese Wushu Association. In 1986 he received the highest award in Wushu the Wu Ying (Grand Master) Award. He is a qualified Judge and Coach in Wushu and has been teaching in Australia professionally since 1988.

Tang Laiwei was the Wushu Coach to the famous Australian stuntman/action director Brad Allen at the time he was selected to join the Jackie Chan stunt team.
