Suede

Biography

  • Suede is an English alternative rock band formed in London in 1989. In 1992, Suede were dubbed by Melody Maker as "The Best New Band in Britain", and attracted much attention from the British music press. The following year their debut album Suede went to the top of the UK Albums Chart, becoming the fastest-selling debut album in almost ten years. It won the Mercury Music Prize and helped foster Britpop as a musical genre.

Trivia

  • A London-based group composed of singer Brett Anderson, drummer Simon Gilbert, bassist Mat Osman, guitarist Richard Oakes (who replaced Bernard Butler in 1994/5), and keyboardist Alex Lee (formerly of Strangelove, who replaced Neil Codling, Gilbert's cousin, who retired in March 2001 because of ME, or chronic fatigue syndrome).
  • Richard Oakes joined in 1994 after original guitarist Bernard Butler, often hailed as the best of his generation, quit. He was 17 years old at the time.
  • Appeared on the cover of Melody Maker, proclaiming them "best band in Britain" before they even released their debut single.
  • Anderson attended University College London; Osman attended London School of Economics; both dropped out before receiving degrees. Codling attended the University of Hull and graduated with a second in English and drama, probably the only member of the group who holds a university degree.
  • A former manager was Ricky Gervais.
