Biography

Arne Sucksdorff was born on February 3, 1917 in Stockholm, Sweden. He was a director and writer, known for The Great Adventure (1953), Mitt hem är Copacabana (1965) and The Flute and the Arrow (1957). He died on May 4, 2001 in Stockholm, Sweden.

Swedish documentary film maker. Initially studied natural science at the University of Stockholm, but dropped out to work as a stage director under Rudolf Klein-Rogge. From there, he progressed to photography, winning a film magazine award. He decided, henceforth, on a career as a nature photographer. His initial effort in 1941, a short feature financed by himself, was so successful that he managed to obtain a grant from the Svensk Filmindustri for a series of further documentaries. He made his first full-length feature in 1953 as a free-lance director. In 1971, he filmed the animal scenes for "Mr. Forbush and the Penguins".
