Educated at St. Paul's and then Westminster, where she was one of the "token girls" in the Sixth Form, she went on to Oxford, where she gained a First Class degree. • She was bottom at school until she found teachers who inspired her at St Pauls. She won a scholarship to Exeter College, Oxford, where she fell in love with acting, causing her to abandon plans to be a physiotherapist. From Oxford, she went to RADA, graduating in 1984. She joined the Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich, then, two years later, moved to The Royal Shakespeare Company. She made her first film, Nanou, and fell in love with her co-star, French actor Jean-Philippe Ecoffey. The relationship ended in1989. Later that year, she was playing Desdemona in a Royal Shakespeare production of Othello when she met Trevor Nunn, 20 years her senior. At the time, he was married to actress Sharon Lee Hill and had two daughters with her, as well as a son by his first wife, actress Janet Suzman. About a year later, Imogen gave birth to a daughter, Ellie, and married Trevor in September 1994. Two years later, she gave birth to a son, Jesse. Since meeting Trevor, her career flourished, with parts such as Ursula in The Rainbow for the BBC and Heartbreak House, directed by her husband. Around 1998, she wrote a chapter in a women's travel book about her home county of Northumberland. She had also written a short screenplay which she was hoping to direct.
