B. T. was born in Appalachia, Virginia and grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee. He began as a radio DJ when he was just 16. He had the highest-rated midday radio show in the U.S. for 16 years. He is the father and acting coach of teen actor, Jake Thomas.

He was one of the top radio announcers in country music radio for 25 years and for years has owned a talent management company, Paradise Management, named after his love of the Caribbean. It was Paradise Management that was the first management team for country star Kenny Chesney, who also loves the Caribbean. Bob said Kenny use to tell me "Bob, I know I can do this. I can be a successful country singer. You got to help me." Bob did and Kenny made it. Bob has said many times that Kenny was the most determined person he has ever met.
