Carl Stokes was born on June 21, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. He was married to Raija Kostadinov and Shirley Edwards. He died on April 3, 1996 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

First black mayor of a major U.S. city, later first black anchorman in New York City.

Younger brother of Louis Stokes and uncle of Lori Stokes.

Survived by his wife, three children: Carl Jr, Courdi, and Cordell, from his first marriage, and one child, from second marriage Cynthia, and one stepson, Sasha Kostadinov.
