Father of director George Stevens and cameraman Jack Stevens.

His brother was Ashton Stevens (1872-1951) the prominent Chicago drama critic. Ashton gave banjo lessons to William Randolph Hearst, leading to his position on the Hearst Chicago paper. Ashton was a mentor of Orson Welles, and the Joseph Cotten character in Citizen Kane (1941), "Jedediah Leland", was modeled on Ashton.

He and his wife were theater actors in San Francisco and on the Orpheum Circuit in the early 1900s. Landers was the actor/manager of Ye Liberty Playhouse in Oakland, California, where he played Shakespeare and Dickens (Sidney Carton in "A Tale of Two Cities" as well as popular plays of the day.) Around 1918 they moved to Glendale, California to take up careers in motion pictures.
