German character actress, on the stage at various theatres in Berlin during the 1920's. In films, played mostly well-to-do or noble-born ladies. Left Germany after being excluded from the Reichstheaterkammer due to her Jewish ancestry. Emigrated to the United States in December 1938 (adopting American citizenship six years later). Helped by William Dieterle to gain a foothold in Hollywood as a bit part supporting player. Left acting in 1966.

Hermine Sterler emigrated to London and afterwards to the USA where she continued her film career with smaller roles.

She was able to continue her film career in the sound film era of the 30s.

After a longer interruption Hermine Sterler appeared a last time in front of the camera. For director Alfred Hitchcock she appeared in the production "Torn Curtain" (1966).

The actress Hermine Sterler began her career at the age of 24 at the Residenztheater in Hannover. After other stations she came to Berlin where she not only acted on stage but also joined the film business.

As a Jew she was not able to work any longer in Germany from 1933 and therefore she went to Austria where she appeared again in few movies like Kleine Mutti" (1935). But with the annexation of Austria to the German Reich her career came to an end in Austria as well.

Hermine Sterler took part in some movies of the 50s and beside it she also acted in some TV productions. To these works belong "How to Marry a Millionaire" (1953) and "Mein Vater der Schauspieler" (1956) - her only German movie after World War II -.
