Biography

Dark-haired leading actress of the 1920's and 30's, on stage from 1911. By 1919, regular performances with the ensemble of the Deutschen Theater in Berlin under the direction of Max Reinhardt. Of Jewish ancestry, she was forced to leave Germany during the Nazi era and emigrated via Prague to the United States. She appeared on the New York stage but was only able to secure a few small film roles. Stein had returned to Germany by 1949, resuming her stage career at the Münchner Kammerspielen and at Berlin's Schiller- and Schloßparktheater. Occasional guest appearances on television.

She managed the breakthrough in the film business in the 20's and took part in many silent movies.

When the National Socialists came into power Lotte Stein had to emigrate to Portugal and a much promising career came to an abrupt end. She only appeared in movies again from 1943 in the USA, where she impersonated small roles.

She continued her film career successfully with talkies in the 30's and was convincing with productions like "Der Greifer" (1930) and Alfred Hitchcock's "Mary/Sir John greift ein!" (1930).

The actress Lotte Stein made a name as a stage actress from the 20's.
