- Was the first choice for "The President" in Doctor Who (1963): The Caves Of Androzani. David Neal was cast, instead.
- Was considered to play "Professor Watson" in The Hand of Fear: Part Two (1976). Glyn Houston was hired instead.
- Had a famous moment as Socrates in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) where he philosophized, "Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives." A year after the film's release, he guest starred as Werner Bayer in 15 episodes of Days of Our Lives (1965), which uses the quote in its title sequence.
