Born in Amsterdam, the son of a shoemaker, Frans van de Staak studied at the Dutch Filmacademy. Often saving 75% of his income, he financed his films entirely through his work as a painter and through grants.

His filmmaking style involved directing both professional and non-professional actors to perform in a non-naturalistic manner. Remarkably, he would sometimes decide whether to keep a take based solely on its sound, without viewing the image.

He strongly believed in incorporating texts from earlier writers into his films, as seen in Uit Het Werk Van Baruch d'Espinoza 1632-1677 (1973), Deed Undone (1989), and Ten Poems by Hubert Korneliszoon Poot. These works respectively draw from Baruch Spinoza, Gerrit Kouwenaar, and Hubert Poot. Yet his films never serve as illustrations of these texts. Rather, they lay the groundwork for his exploration of language and solitude, transposing the texts into a modern setting. Some of the fundamental questions in his work include: How can humans be profoundly lonely in a social setting? How can a group of people speak one after the other without entering a proper conversation?

In the effervescent artistic scene of Amsterdam, he was known for his altruism. Throughout his career, he supported young independent filmmakers by welcoming them into his workshop, where self-made post-production devices were available. He often served as a producer and advisor during the editing of their films.

Though rarely seen during his lifetime due to their non-commercial nature, his films attracted the attention of critics and fellow filmmakers. His friend, the acclaimed filmmaker Jean-Marie Straub, wrote that he was one of the three great European filmmakers, alongside Jean-Claude Rousseau and Peter Nestler, and "the only true heir to Dziga Vertov."
