Biography

  • Giannis Sparidis was a Greek comedian, playwright, and actor, primarily known for his work in musical theater and variety shows. Born Ioannis Spanomaridis, he began his acting career as an amateur in Asia Minor, performing for soldiers during the Greco-Turkish War. His professional debut came in 1924 with the "Young Actors' Troupe" in Athens, where he became a member of the Greek Actors' Union (S.E.H.). In 1929, he appeared in the revue Lovitoura and subsequently dedicated himself to musical theater. He collaborated for many years with theatrical impresario Andreas Makedos at venues such as the Mondial Theater and later performed at the Athens and Lyrikon theaters. By the late 1930s, he had gained popularity in variety shows, particularly for his portrayal of the Armenian character "Agop," a role also associated with actor Filios Filippidis. He frequently performed at the Oasis Variety Theater in Zappeion under director Giorgos Thisvios. During the Axis Occupation of Greece, Sparidis was an active member of the National Liberation Front (EAM). Post-war, he continued his career in musical theater, appearing with the Giorgos Oikonomidis-Filon Arias troupe at the Rialto Theater in 1948-49. He was honored with the War Cross for his contributions. Sparidis also had a significant presence in Greek cinema, recognized for his distinctive voice and collaborations with noted actors, including Thanasis Vengos. One of his last film appearances was in 2 Crazies and a Shrewd One (1970).
