Biography

Phil Spitalny was born on November 7, 1890 in Odessa, Kherson Governorate, Russian Empire [now Ukraine]. He was an actor, known for Cinderella Man (2005), When Johnny Comes Marching Home (1942) and Here Come the Co-eds (1945). He was married to Evelyn Kaye Klein and Rose Swirsky. He died on October 11, 1970 in Miami Beach, Florida, USA.

He was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Radio at 6364 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California.

Composer and musician of Ukrainian background, who came to the fore in the 1930's as leader of one of the few all-female orchestras of the big band era. Known as the Hour of Charm All Girl Orchestra, the 22-piece ensemble featured Evelyn and Her Magical Violin (who eventually became Mrs. Spitalny) and was hosted by Arlene Francis as Mistress of Ceremonies in Spitalny's 'Hour of Charm' radio show (1934-48).
