Biography

Won a Pulitzer prize for his comic book "MAUS" (1992).

Two children: Nadja, b. 1987; Dashiell, b. 1992.

Published the graphic arts magazine "Raw (Real Art Works)", where his graphic novel "Maus" first appeared in serial format.

Teaches art at the School of Visual Arts, New York City.

Worked briefly with Topps Gum Company, drawing "Bazooka Joe" comic strips that were included with pieces of Bazooka bubble gum.

[Maus] The einsatzgruppen would knock a prisoner's cap off so that when he ran to fetch it they could shoot him.

I didn't make "Maus" to teach anyone anything. I wasn't making "Auschwitz for Beginners." And I do not want "Maus" to ever be used as a recruiting poster for the Israeli army! (February 2025)

Life is a more dimensional and interesting affair than vestigially Victorian notions of childhood.

There's a therapeutic aspect to all making, but the nature of working is to compress, condense, and shape stuff, not to just expunge it. It's not just an exorcism.

I became a philosophy major literally to understand why I should put up with this shit.
