Biography

Norman Spencer was born on March 3, 1891 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. He was a composer and actor, known for The Big Chance (1933), The New Adventures of Tarzan (1935) and The Song of the Flame (1930). He was married to Leona Hannah Matthews. He died on February 15, 1940 in Manhattan, New York, USA.

Also acting as hiring agent for Leon Schlesinger's cartoon studio, Norman consistently refused to let one young actor audition to do voices for the studio. According to the actor, Mel Blanc, it wasn't until Norman supposedly died that Mel was able to audition. Although Mel's arrival at the studio has been dated at 1936, there has been no hard evidence that Norman in fact died that year.

According to a 1936 Schlesinger studio timeline in The Film Daily, Spencer resigned in 1936.

As music director of Leon Schlesinger's cartoon studio from 1933 to 1936, Spencer scored 75 "Looney Tunes" and "Merrie Melodies" shorts for release by Warner Bros. They included the earliest cartoons featuring Porky Pig, Warners' first real "star" character.
