Biography

  • Spence, born in England contracted polio as a child, but overcame it and later served a stint in the British Army. After his discharge, Spence pursued a childhood dream of racing cars and he started club racing in England. He entered Formula 1 in 1963 and did reasonably well for the next several years. Spence was starting to show great promise when he was killed in a practice crash at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1968.
