Evgenios Spatharis(1924-2009)

Evgenios Spatharis had been the defining figure of Greek shadow theater and the artist most closely associated with bringing Karagiozis to modern mass audiences through television, recordings, and film. The son of celebrated puppeteer Sotiris Spatharis, he had grown up immersed in the tradition that would shape his life's work, eventually embracing the art despite early expectations that he might follow a different path. He began performing publicly during the German occupation, when his heroic and patriotic themes resonated strongly with audiences, and over the decades he became synonymous with the popular revival and preservation of Karagiozis in Greece. Beyond shadow theater, he had also been an accomplished painter with numerous exhibitions, and his artistic life extended into collaborations with selective major Greek cultural figures such as Manos Hatzidakis, Dionysis Savvopoulos, and Melina Mercouri. His contribution was recognized with major honors including the Rome Prize and later the title of Grand Master from the Greek Ministry of Culture. In 1991 he established the Spathario Museum, devoted to the history and legacy of his art, securing his place as one of the most influential custodians of Greek popular performance culture.
