Biography

After a short career in the army as lieutenant, he started a new career as an actor. Studied in the school of performing arts in Oporto, created by the Italian film director Rino Lupo, and began performing in theatre and cinema. In the 20s he left Portugal and went to Brazil, then Mozambique, India and finally Macao where he was married and his daughter was born. In Macao he was a civil servant but also a theatre actor and director. José Soveral returned to Portugal in 1951, but even during his stay in Macao he went to Portugal to perform at least in a film in 1949.

Grandfather of the actor Luís Soveral.

His father, João Baptista de Arêde Soveral, was a colonel of Portuguese army and a Nobleman of the Royal Household of Portugal. His mother was Felícia Paula Pereira Marques.

Grandchildren: António José (b.1960), Luís Soveral (b.1961), Maria de Fátima and Maria da Conceição (twins born in 1962) and Maria João (b.1964).

Daughter with Floriza (b.1905): Maria de Fátima Lopes de Arêde Soveral (b.February 2 1933 in Macau, d. July 6 1991 in Lisbon). Fátima married in 1959 with António José Varella.

Had three brothers named João (b.1878), Rodrigo (b.1882) and Vitor (b.1893) and two sisters named Aurora (b.1885) and Beatriz (b.1898).
