Biography

Willie 'The Lion' Smith was born on November 23, 1893 in Goshen, New York, USA. He was an actor, known for Jazz Party (1958), Sounds of Summer (1969) and Jazz Concert (1949). He died on April 18, 1973 in New York City, New York, USA.

Jazz musician.

Inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1987.

Considered one of the great stride piano players.

Saw active service on the Western front during World War I where he acquired his nickname due to several acts of heroism.

Played piano from the age of six.
