Smith was a passionate railway and railway modelling enthusiast. He wrote a book about model railways entitled "Little Trains of Thought", which was published in 1977.
Smith was for many years New Zealand's highest rated radio broadcaster, presenting the breakfast show on Auckland-based Radio 1ZB from 1961 until 1986.
