Gunboat Smith(1887-1974)

Edward "Gunboat" Smith was a professional boxer. In 1914 he won the "white hope heavyweight championship" by knocking out Arthur Pelkey. The recognized world champion at the time was Jack Johnson. Later in 1914, Smith lost his championship to Georges Carpentier in London. The bout ended in controversy, when Smith sent Carpentier to the canvas with a right arm smash to the Frenchman’s ear. As the count began, Smith rapped Carpentier on the back of the head. Carpentier was helped to his feet and was awarded the decision. Smith later claimed that the blow was unintentional, as he had lost his balance. It was the first loss of Smith’s career. In 1918, Smith fought Jack Dempsey but was knocked out. Smith retired from boxing in 1921, sporting a record of 53-10-6 with 39 knockouts. He died in Florida in 1974.
