Biography

Cyril Smith

Overview

  • Born
June 28, 1928 · Rochdale, Lancashire, England, UK
  • Died
September 3, 2010 · Rochdale, Lancashire, England, UK (in his sleep)

Mini bio

  • Beginning 2 years after his death, Smith has been the subject of various reports and investigations into alleged sexual abuse of young boys. The BBC reports that he was alleged to have abused youngsters who were residents of various children's homes, including in London, and his own home town of Rochdale, for which he was the MP.

The police opened an investigation in January 2013. His conduct had previously been looked into as early as 1970, with the police at the time deciding that a conviction was 'unlikely'. One of his accusers blames the political establishment for "turning a blind eye" to his conduct.

Trivia

  • The Liberal Party had only 6 MPs after the 1970 General Election. The joke was that they held party meetings in one full taxi. Smith enjoyed the change after his election when it was said the party now needed two taxis, and both were full.
  • He was awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1966 Queen's Birthday Honours List and awarded Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire in the 1988 Queen's Honours List for his services to government.
