When she died, she bequeathed $200,000 each in trust to her two younger children Jack Pickford and Lottie Pickford and to Lottie's daughter Gwynne. But she left the large bulk of her estate to her eldest daughter Mary Pickford of $1 million, because she recognized that Mary had sacrificed her childhood to become the family's breadwinner at age 5. Charlotte wrote in her will: "Whatever property I possess at the time of my death has come to me through my association with my beloved daughter in her business and through her most unusual generosity to me.".

When her husband died of an injury, she was left with the huge financial burden of his medical expenses, along with taking care of three small children and her paralyzed mother. She took in sewing and rented out the master bedroom to boarders, one of whom was a theatrical producer. He urged her into putting her eldest child Mary Pickford into show business at the tender age of 5, and Mary would become the family's primary breadwinner. She became a very effective stage mother, managing Mary's career and talked her into a film career, at a time when people looked down on movies, including Mary. Mary always credited her mother for her success, that included becoming an silent movie icon and the second actress to win the Best Actress Academy Award.

The 1925 and 1926 editions of Wid's Film Year Book listed her as the president of the Pickford-Fairbanks Studio.
