Considered to be one of the greatest directors of Swedish theatre. For many years, he also served as a mentor and coach for Ingmar Bergman.

His films usually had complex plots and were characterised by a strong visual sense, a mixture of realism and expressionism.

In his later years, became disillusioned with film and returned to the stage.

Twice winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for Torment (1944) and Miss Julie (1951). The other directors to have won the Palme d'Or twice are Francis Ford Coppola, Bille August, Cristian Mungiu, Ruben Östlund, Emir Kusturica, Shōhei Imamura, Jean-Pierre Dardenne & Luc Dardenne, Michael Haneke and Ken Loach.
