- Polar explorer and military geographer; biologist; youngest member of first Byrd Antarctic expedition (1928-1930): chief biologist of second Byrd Antarctic expedition (1933-1935); chief geographer and navigator of third Byrd Antarctic expedition (1939-1940). An expert on climatology and the problems of sub-freezing environments. In six expeditions to Antarctica, Siple spent over four years in South Polar Regions, more time than any other person. Siple brought back the first living Emperor penguins to the United States, but they soon died from the difficulty of adapting to a warm climate. One went on view at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.
- Inducted into the Erie [Pennsylvania] Hall of Fame in 2008 (inaugural class).
