Biography

Nigel Sinclair is a British film and television producer and director best known for his work on award-winning feature films and music and cultural documentaries. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he has played a pivotal role in bridging international finance, independent filmmaking, and prestige nonfiction storytelling.

Born in the United Kingdom and educated at Cambridge University, Sinclair initially trained as a lawyer, later earning an LLM from Columbia University. After relocating to Los Angeles in the late 1970s and passing the California Bar, he became a prominent entertainment lawyer, representing leading actors and directors including Mel Gibson, Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman, Peter Weir, Ridley Scott, and Tony Scott. In 1989, he co-founded Sinclair Tenenbaum & Co., a firm that helped pioneer the financing and structuring of large-scale independent films, contributing to projects such as Hamlet, Braveheart, 1492: Conquest of Paradise, and Green Card.

In 1996, Sinclair transitioned fully into film production, co-founding Intermedia Films, which quickly became one of the world’s leading independent production companies. Intermedia’s slate included Sliding Doors, Hilary and Jackie, The Wedding Planner, The Quiet American, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, and Iris. In 2000, Intermedia became a publicly traded company on Frankfurt’s Neuer Markt.

Sinclair later co-founded Spitfire Pictures, focusing on feature films and music documentaries, producing projects such as Masked and Anonymous, Amazing Journey: The Story of The Who, and Martin Scorsese’s No Direction Home: Bob Dylan. These films established him as a major force in music and cultural documentary filmmaking.

He went on to found Exclusive Media, serving as CEO and Co-Chairman, where he produced and financed films including Rush, End of Watch, Snitch, and Parkland. In 2014, Sinclair co-founded White Horse Pictures, a production company dedicated exclusively to premium documentary storytelling. Under White Horse, he produced The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years, Pavarotti, The Apollo, The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, Lucy and Desi, The Beach Boys, Billy Preston: That’s the Way God Planned It, and Stax: Soulsville U.S.A.

Sinclair’s work has received widespread critical acclaim and numerous honors, including Academy Awards, BAFTAs, Emmys, Grammys, Peabody Awards, and Critics’ Choice Awards. Notable winners include Undefeated (Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature), No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (Grammy, Emmy, Peabody), and The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years (Grammy and Emmy). In 2000, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to the film industry.

A member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and BAFTA, Sinclair is widely regarded as one of the leading producers of music, arts, and cultural documentaries. Based in Los Angeles, his work continues to focus on films that document cultural history and enduring artistic legacies.
