- She is the biological sister of Steve Jobs, being the second child of Joanne Schieble and Abdulfattah Jandali. Unlike Jobs, who was put up for adoption, Mona was raised by her biological parents until they divorced when she was five, and later took her stepfather's last name, Simpson. Simpson and Jobs did not meet until 1986, and became close friends.
- The character of Mona Simpson on The Simpsons (1989) was named after her. Her husband, Richard Appel, was a writer on the show.
