- Inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame, 1984.
- Won the Gold Medal in the Marathon at the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich, Germany. Won the Silver Medal in the Marathon at the 1976 Summer Olympic Games in Montreal, Canada. It was later found that the Gold Medalist, Waldemar Cierpinski of East Germany, had been using performance enhancing drugs.
- Inducted into the Boulder [Colorado] Sports Hall of Fame in 2011 (inaugural class).
- Was a member of the U.S. Olympic marathon team. Won the gold medal in the 1972 Olympics and the silver medal in the 1976 Olympics. Also a five-time national 10,000 meter champion and a four-time national cross-country champion.
