- Kaneto Shindō was born on April 22, 1912 in Hiroshima, Japan. He was a writer and director, known for The Naked Island (1960), Postcard (2010) and A Last Note (1995). He was married to Nobuko Otowa and Miyo Shindo. He died on May 29, 2012 in Hiroshima, Japan.

- He was the second oldest active film-maker in the world and the oldest film director in Japan.
- He became a trainee under director Kenji Mizoguchi. Although Mizoguchi did not teach screenwriting, Shindo thought that working under him would improve his screenwriting skills.
