Was of Ukrainian and Polish heritage. He was born Petr Shelokhonov to Ukrainian father and Polish mother in Poland in 1929 and was Polish citizen by birth. In 1939 the Soviets occupied Poland and renamed the land as Belarussia, so he was forcefully made a Belarussian and Soviet citizen against his will.

Had acting career in Latvia in 1949 - 1954 and received Honorable Mention Letter from the Government of Latvian Republic for stage work. Later worked in Siberia and in Leningrad/Saint Petersburg. Designated Honorable Actor of Russia (1979).

Played violin, accordion and piano professionally.

Played chess, had several sets of chess ready to play at home and at his theatre company.

Was fond of the Hermitage museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Was a good friend of actors Sergei Boyarsky and Mikhail Boyarsky in St. Petersburg, Russia.

His big screen debut was in 1968, in the film titled "Hidden Enemy" - playing on the fact that the western spy, played by Petr Shelokhonov, was shown infiltrating the Soviet rank and file while he wore a Soviet captain uniform. This film was banned as anti-Soviet and Petr Shelokhonov was censored. The film was completely re-made and released in 1969 as Razvyazka (1970), in it the the spy was wearing a white shirt, because the Soviet KGB ordered the filmmakers to do such changes.
