- She was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) before being awarded the Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in the 2018 Queen's New Years Honours List for her services to Science and Technology Educational Outreach in London, England.
- In 2015 she joined the faculty of the Imperial College London.
- She was a chemist at the Mars factory in Slough when she heard a job ad on the radio to be part of an Anglo-Soviet venture: "Astronaut wanted. No experience necessary." She was chosen from 13,000 applicants, and became the first British person in space as a research cosmonaut on board Soyuz TM-12 with two Soviet cosmonauts. Soyuz docked with the space station Mir on May 20, 1991. The mission lasted nearly eight days.
- She received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Sheffield and a doctorate from Birbeck College, London.
