Biography

Eduardo Serra was born on October 2, 1943 in Lisbon, Portugal. He was a cinematographer and director, known for Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003), Unbreakable (2000) and Blood Diamond (2006). He died on August 19, 2025.

Awarded the prestigious Ordem do Infante D. Henrique, one of Portuguese's highest honors, by President Jorge Sampaio June 10th 2004.

Member of AFC (Association Française des directeurs de la photographique Française) and of ASC (American Society of Cinematographers).

Between 1960 and 1963, Serra studied engineering at Lisbon's Instituto Superior Técnico. He was forced to leave the country after his involvement in students' protests against Salazar's dictatorship and settled in France. There, he was accepted to the Vaugirard film school in Paris, graduating in 1966. In 1970 he got his second degree from the Paris-Sorbonne University, in Art History and Archeology.

Has often collaborated with directors Patrice Leconte and Claude Chabrol.
