- Mathias was born in 1970 in Ardooie. He went to the Conservatory in Brussels to get professional actor's training. For the moment, he lives in Ghent, he is married and has 2 kids. Most people know him from the series _"Buiten de Zone" (1995)_ , in which he played Ubi Stevens. Besides playing in series like "Diamant" and "W817" he has made guest appearances in almost every Flemish quality television series: Flikken and Recht op recht among others. His breakthrough in the Flemish movie world came with the movie Ad Fundum (1993), later followed films like Iedereen Beroemd (2000), Team Spirit (2000) and Team Spirit II. He has also written a film scenario himself, called 6. Lately he has mostly been active in the world of theatre. Mostly as an actor, but also as a writer and a director.

Mathias graduated in 1992 from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. He's performed in over 50 shows and already wrote 8 plays. Since 2010 Mathias has been a member of the theatre company De Spelerij.
His first big role in a television series was Ubi Stevens in the very popular teen comedy-drama Buiten De Zone. Over the years he's played important roles in many series such as Ons Geluk, Diamant, the teen comedy-drama W817, Team Spirit, Halleluja!,... He had leads in seasons 9 and 10 of the crime series Flikken, seasons 1 and 2 of De Rodenburgs and seasons 1 and 2 of Danni Lowinski.
In 2013 Mathias created, wrote, co-directed and played a main character in the drama series Marsman. The show aired in 2014, was well received by critics and audiences alike and became a big success.
Apart from playing main characters Mathias also often makes guest appearances on various series.
On the big screen Mathias has been under the direction of the renowned Erik Van Looy, Liever Debrauwer, Dominique Deruddere, Jan Verheyen, Guy Thys.
Mathias is also a singer and is a member of several bands under his alias Staf Steegmans.
