- His godmother was I Love Lucy (1951) actress Vivian Vance (who played Ethel Mertz), a close friend of his mother Jane Bashir, a radio actress and scriptwriter, whose name Vance mentioned on a number of episodes.
- Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 (as a member of The Lovin' Spoonful).

- Played harmonica on The Doors song "Roadhouse Blue" which appeared on their 1970 album "Morrison Hotel". However, due to the fact that he was signed to another label and the fact that he didn't want his name associated with the group's singer Jim Morrison, who was on trial for indecent exposure in Miami, he was uncredited.

- Was not on the bill for Woodstock. He was there as a spectator. However, because several of the acts had not arrived and the stagehands were still sweeping up after a brief rainstorm, the promoters drafted him to perform in order to kill time.
- Was often mistaken for keyboardist Ray Manzarek of The Doors due to their strong resemblance.
