By the time she was twenty-four, Scott had appeared in one of the greatest westerns ever made and arguably one of the greatest films ever made, The Searchers (1956), and the iconic comedy Auntie Mame (1958). Ironicallly, she spent most of her career appearing in many television dramas and comedies and on the stage. She returned to film in the 1970s to do a handful of movies, none of them classics or iconic.

Scott played the character of Molly Wood, newspaper editor, in the six episodes of the first season of the Virginian (1962) and seemed set to become a major character in the series. Her character then disappeared from the series. It was not an indicator or dissatisfaction with Scott's performance but because the producers decided to focus on the cluster of characters at the ranch and return to the town only on occasion. In season three, the Virginian indicated to Trampas that he and Molly were going to get married only to start to walk to the newspaper office and see it blown up. He spent the rest of the episode seeking Molly's murderer. The fact that the character was briefly resurrected but Scott was not invited to return for a cameo indicates how firmly committed the producers were to the path they had chosen for the show.
