Biography

John S. Scott built his career behind the camera long before stepping into the director’s chair. Scott began in the camera department, where years as a camera operator gave him an instinctive understanding of composition, movement, performance and the mechanics of visual storytelling. While working as the A-camera operator on Ryan Murphy’s Nip/Tuck, Murphy tapped Scott to direct his first episode. That transition from camera operator to director became the foundation of an episodic career spanning drama, comedy, thriller, science fiction and elevated genre television. His directing work includes Netflix’s YOU, Peacock’s Bel-Air and One of Us Is Lying, as well as The Magicians, Star Trek: Discovery, Suits, American Horror Story, Glee, The Office, Revenge and Nip/Tuck. As his career evolved, Scott moved beyond episodic directing into producing and creative leadership. He served as an executive producer on Season 4 of Netflix/YOU while continuing to direct the series, and as a co-executive producer/director on the first season of Peacock/One of Us Is Lying.

His episode of The Magicians, "A Life in the Day," was selected by Rolling Stone as one of the 10 Best Television Episodes of 2018.
