Biography

Gunther Schuller was born on November 22, 1925 in Queens, New York City, New York, USA. He was a composer, known for Naprawde wczoraj (1963), The Visitation (1971) and America's Musical Theater (1985). He was married to Marjorie Black. He died on June 21, 2015 in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

Father of jazz percussionist George Schuller and bassist Ed Schuller.

He was director of the Berkshire Music Center from 1970 to 1984 and president of the New England Conservatory.

His paternal grandfather and father were professional musicians. He was an accomplished French horn player before becoming a composer fusing jazz and classical.
