Scion of a wealthy family, Schine became infamous in the 1950s as an aide to the virulently anti-Communist and (seemingly) anti-homosexual demagogue Sen.

Roy M. Cohn, who were later disgraced. These two moved heaven and earth to keep Schine out of the military draft, without success; Schine, to understate, did not take well to army life and his complaints drew much negative attention during the "Army-McCarthy Hearings." For example, he asked for Reveille to be delayed because he did not like to get up so early in the mornings, and he also asked for fur-lined boots to replace regulation Army issue. After McCarthy's death, he married the former Miss Sweden and Miss Universe (1955).
