  • Trivia
Scion of a wealthy family, Schine became infamous in the 1950s as an aide to the virulently anti-Communist and (seemingly) anti-homosexual demagogue Sen. Joseph McCarthy and his assistant Roy M. Cohn, who were later disgraced. These two moved heaven and earth to keep Schine out of the military draft, without success; Schine, to understate, did not take well to army life and his complaints drew much negative attention during the "Army-McCarthy Hearings." For example, he asked for Reveille to be delayed because he did not like to get up so early in the mornings, and he also asked for fur-lined boots to replace regulation Army issue. After McCarthy's death, he married the former Miss Sweden and Miss Universe (1955).
