He is survived by his wife and two sons, writer Giacomo Scarpelli and violoncellist Matteo Scarpelli.

Together with his colleague Agenore Incrocci, he helped create the commedia all'italiana style of film-making which satirized contemporary Italian life during the economic boom of the late 1950s and early 1960s.
