- He converted to Buddhism after being introduced to the religion by his partner Agnes Lillis.
- In addition to his son by his marriage to Melanie Self, he also had a daughter from a relationship with Penny Ansell, and a son and daughter with his partner Agnes Lillis.
- After he and Agnes Lillis moved to Beccles, near Lowestoft, in Suffolk in 1995, they set up a theatre company, Eastbound, and taught adult acting at evening classes at the Seagull Theatre in Lowestoft.
