Biography

Dionysis Savvopoulos was born on December 2, 1944 in Thessaloniki, Greece. He was a composer and actor, known for Happy Day (1976), Monday (2020) and Thiasos skion (10 tainies mikrou mikous) (1974). He was married to Aspasia Arapidou. He died on October 21, 2025 in Athens, Greece.

In 1963 he moved to Athens and although he began studying at the Law School of Thessaloniki , he very quickly realized that his path in life was playing music.

During the Greek junta era, he was imprisoned twice for his political beliefs in 1967.

Having roots from Constantinople and Philippopolis, he received a wide range of influences from the East at a young age.

Savvopoulos published his autobiography, "Why The Years Fly By," in early 2025, where he spoke openly about his his battle with lung cancer, diagnosed in 2020.

Dionysis Savopoulos is one of the most important figures in European culture. As a lyricist, in his country, he has played a significant role, forming an alternative artistic approach in the new era of contemporary music, based on the excellent elements of folk music. Through his poetic lyrics and musical exploration, he has exerted a great influence on his contemporaries and later songwriters, conveying and blending national, Balkan and Western sounds in a personal and unique way.
