Best known for his stage play, "Next Time I'll Sing To You", which had a London run of three years in the early 1960s.

He was offered the chance to write the screenplay for "Georgy Girl" and turned it down. Peter Nichols, another young playwright who had attracted some critical attention, did the script instead. Saunders later regretted his refusal, praising Nichols for realizing that "a third-rate novel could be improved into a second-rate film".
