Biography

Fernando Santos, also known as Deborah Krystal, which also appears spelled Cristal, is an actor and drag queen known for his most famous performance in the film To Die Like a Man (2009) which earned him a nomination for Best Actor at the Portuguese Golden Globes and was hailed as "gaudy finery" by the New York Times.

Born in 1961, in Mouraria, the son of "a ready-to-wear merchant and a market saleswoman", he was employed in a clothing store (not his father's) and in a florist on Avenida de Roma, before discovering that he was going to spend his life on a stage.

The name "Deborah Krystal" was born in the middle of a show in which several participants were in the dressing room and decided to start changing war titles. Fernando was Susie Flower at the time, and Deborah, who later found out to mean bee in Hebrew. Krystall, "a sparkling word", came from her fascination with semi-precious stones.

He is currently headlining and director of the show at the Finalmente bar (Lisbon).
