Biography

Pavel Sanaev is a film editor, screenwriter, and director whose career in filmmaking began with editing.

His fascination with the craft started at seventeen, when he used two home VHS decks to create a music video for Iron Maiden by cutting together sequences from different action films. What began as a teenage experiment became a lasting fascination with the ability of editing to transform unrelated images into a coherent story, creating rhythm, tension, emotion, and an entirely new cinematic reality.

In the late 1990s, Sanaev gained early experience in documentary editing rooms and began editing his own documentary work on videotape. With the arrival of digital nonlinear editing, he moved to Adobe Premiere and continued developing his craft through short films and other narrative projects.

Editing also shaped the way Sanaev approached cinema as a whole. His fascination with visual storytelling, performance, rhythm, and narrative structure eventually led him into screenwriting and directing. Throughout his career as a filmmaker, however, editing remained central to his creative process, and he continued to edit his own narrative films.

His work as an editor combines an instinct for pace, tension, action, and performance with the perspective of a screenwriter and director.
